Are lung cancer and mesothelioma the same thing?

No, it is not. Mesothelioma is a cancer, but not of the lung. Mesothelioma is a cancer in the mesothelial layer that surrounds organs, including the lungs. Lung cancer, on the other hand, is a cancer within the lung tissue.

Mesothelioma can occur in other areas of the body, the abdomen, for example, and even around the testicles.

Now, you are likely wondering whether this matters in the context of Louisiana asbestos disease law. It does! Each disease is treated as a unique injury. If, for example, client John Smith sues his employer because he developed lung cancer caused by asbestos exposures on the job and then beats the cancer only to develop mesothelioma several years later, he can sue his employer again.

Of course, this is just a simple hypothetical. Each case is different. If you have additional questions or have a second asbestos disease, feel free to contact me. I hope I can help.
